UNIT 4 : POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTIONS
LESSON
3: POLYNOMIAL DIVISION
The
zeros of a polynomial function are easy to find if the function is in factored
form. However if the function is in
standard form, we
must be able
to write it in factored form in order to find the zeros. This is done by a theorem which is called
the Factor Theorem. In
order to
use the factor theorem, we must first learn how to divide polynomials.
Long Division of Polynomials
Check using the division algorithm above:
Note: If the
remainder is zero as in example 1 above then the divisor is a factor of the
dividend.
Check using the division algorithm above:
Division of Polynomials using Synthetic Division
If the
divisor is linear of the form x – a, then this method may be used.
