UNIT 2  : SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS

LESSON 4 :  PROBLEM SOLVING USING SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS

Systems of equations are often used to solve problems in math, science and business.  First we must build a mathematical model

of the problem.  The following example illustrates how this is done.  It is followed by a blue box outlining the key steps in the strategy.

Rectangular Callout: Strategies for Solving Word Problems Involving Two Unknowns.
§	What is unknown or what are you asked to find?.
§	Assign a different variable to each unknown.
§	Translate each statement about the unknowns into an equation.
§	Solve the resulting system of equations using substitution, elimination or matrices.
§	Make a conclusion answering the question posed in the problem.
§	Check your conclusion using the original wording of the problem, not the equations.
